Welcome to Year 1/2! I hope you have all had a lovely break and had a well deserved rest and time spent with your loved ones. Here's to the start of an exciting year ahead with lots to look forward too.....

At the bottom of this page I have attached this years topic overview, homework and spelling sheets along with some useful links to help you with your learning.
To begin our English topic this half-term, we are going to be reading 'The Pirates Next Door'. During this unit we will begin writing simple captions to practice using our phonics, finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. We will explore the vocabulary used and what the author uses to join longer sentences together. During this unit we will discuss what it would be like if pirates moved next door to St Cuthbert's and how we would feel. We will look at different adjectives to describe our feelings and explain our reasons why we don't want them here. To finish the unit, we will apply the key skills we have learnt during this unit and write a letter of complaint to Mrs McGuire and Mr Lawrence about these horrid pirates and see what can be done about them!
In Autumn, our first unit is Place Value. During this unit we will be doing lots of counting, forwards and backwards from 0-100. We will look at tens and ones within 50 and start to compare numbers using signs and symbols. We will learn how to read and write numbers in numerals and words to 100 and look at different ways to represent these using tens and ones, part whole models and Numicon. We will be ordering numbers, adding tens and ones and learn how to use a place value chart.
This half term we will start our unit 'Buried Treasure'. During this unit we will learn how to devise our own map and simple key, helping our partners locate the buried treasure hidden around our school grounds. We will use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of our school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment. We will compare this with a seaside town (St Ives) and discuss where we would rather live and why. When devising a map of our school and local area we will learn how to use simple compass directions (North, South, East and West) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far; left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map.
In Science this half term we will be continuing our learning all about Living things in their Habitats. We will use our knowledge from last year to help us explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive by exploring in our forest area. We will be reading the Bog Baby to help us identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other. Using our local area to support our learning, we will identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including microhabitats and even make our own hedgehog huts to help the animals in our environment. During this unit we will describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food. We will be working scientifically by asking questions, gathering data, performing simple tests and using our observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions.
This half term in religion we will be focusing on the topic 'New Beginnings'. We will learn that everyday brings us new beginnings and that God is present for them all. We will discuss how we feel during new beginnings and what they teach us. We will be visiting the school chapel once a week to carry out our collective worship where the children will take it in turns to lead.
This half term your homework needs to be completed each week online (Seesaw) by choosing from our homework board. Spelling lists are attached below and on Seesaw for our spelling test on a Friday. Children will bring a reading book home each night and have the opportunity to change these in the morning when your reading record has been signed by a parent. We encourage all children to be accessing Reading Eggs and My Maths weekly where they will find tasks set for them to complete.
This half term you will need to come into school wearing your PE kit on PE days which are a Monday and a Friday. In PE you will be practicing your basic ball skills with Mr Berry outside and gymnastics skills in the hall.
