Welcome to Year 1/2G!
Teacher: Miss Griffiths
Summer 1 2020
Welcome back Year 1 and 2! I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break and had some well deserved rest and time spent with your loved ones. I am looking forward to working with you this half term as we continue to love, learn and grow together. The last half term was very different for all of us, but as always, you showed us how resilient you all are and all settled back into school after working at home fantastically.
On this class page you will be able to find information about this half terms learning.
At the bottom of this page I have attached this years topic overview, homework and spelling sheets along with some useful links to help you with your learning.
This half term your homework needs to be completed weekly online on Seesaw. Spelling lists are attached below and on Seesaw for our spelling test on a Friday. Reading books will be given out on a Thursday and are to be returned to school on the following Monday. We encourage all children to be accessing Reading Eggs and My Maths weekly where they will find tasks set for them to complete.
This half term you will need to come into school wearing your PE kit on PE days which are a Monday and Thursday. In PE you will be practicing your basic ball skills with Mr Berry and doing some Dance with Miss Griffiths.
To begin our English learning this half-term, we will be reading "The day the crayons quit" by Drew Daywalt which is a book about a little boy named Duncan and his box of crayons, which one day decide to go on strike because they are not satisfied with how they are used. We will be writing a letter back to the crayons with reasons why they shouldn't quit. In our letter we will learn how to include apostrophes for possession and contractions. We will also practice using expanded noun phrases and varied conjunctions. This half term we will also be reading the book "I'll take you to see Mrs Coyle" and will create a detailed setting description.
We are starting this half term by completing our topic on fractions where the children will learn how to spot a half, quarter and a third of a shape and a group. We will then be moving onto measurement where the children will continue their learning from last year on length and height. To end the half term we will also start the new topic position and direction. In each Maths lesson we will practice our counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s and work on developing our problem solving and reasoning.
Our topic this half term is 'The Seaside. During this unit we will be learning about how the Seaside was different during the Victorian times and how it has changed throughout the years. We will display our findings on a timeline using dates to order the events. We will also use our Geographical knowledge to help us to compare the physical changes.
In Science this half term we will be learning all about Plants. We will use our knowledge from last year to help us name common plants and spot deciduous and evergreen trees. We will learn the basic structure of a plant and will spot some on our Seasons walk. We will continue our learning on seasons by going on a Summer walk and discussing the changes in the weather and the plants around us.
We will be focusing on the topic of 'Change' during Religion this half term. We will be discussing how change happens all of the time and can be a good thing and that God would like us to adapt and grow when things change.
