Welcome to Year 3! I hope you have all had a lovely summer and had a well deserved rest with your loved ones. Here's to the start of an exciting year ahead with lots to look forward too! I can't wait to be your teacher again and to watch you all love, learn and grow in KS2!
On our class page you will be able to find information about this half terms learning.
At the top of this page I have attached this years topic overview and at the bottom you will find homework and spelling sheets along with some useful links to help you with your learning.
In our English sessions we will begin the half term by looking at some familiar fairy tales and looking at key themes in the different stories. We will then have a go at comparing and contrasting them whilst building on our knowledge from KS1. Our final piece will be to innovate an existing story by changing some of the main characters and settings, we will work to include lots of interesting expanded noun phrases, openers and conjunctions, as well as beginning to include speech.
For our Guided Reading sessions, we will be focusing on applying our growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes, both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words that we discover. We will also be reading further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in the word. An important focus of our sessions will be checking that the text makes sense and discussing our understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context. Over the holidays, try to spend some time reading different styles of texts and practising your word reading and comprehension as much as possible.
We will start the half term by consolidating our place value to 100 knowledge and then will move onto practising using column addition and subtraction including solving some challenging calculations. We will end the half term by learning how to formally read and solve multiplication and division problems and will move on from using pictorial representations to learning the column method for multiplication. We will compare statements and identify patterns and related calculations and move on to multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit numbers with an exchange. In division we will be dividing 100 into 2, 4, 5 and 10 equal parts as well as dividing a 2 digit number by a one digit number and dividing with remainders.
As part of our learning, we will find out about different kinds of rocks and what they can be used for, explore a variety of soils and find out how they are formed, discover the fascinating world of fossils, as well as undertaking a variety of experiments o practise working scientifically.
In Religion this half term we will be learning all about The Church and how people celebrated during different religious ceremonies in the year. We will then use this learning to think about how people use their homes to pray and how they treat each other.
Please continue with the fabulous work on Seesaw for this half term's homework, the homework will be ready for you to get started with on the first week of term. The children will need to choose one activity they wish to complete each week from their homework board and to try and complete one piece each week on Seesaw. Spelling lists will be put on Seesaw half-termly and the children will be tested in school on a Friday. Activities will be put on Reading eggs, Maths seeds and Timetables Rock Stars every week to be completed.
This half term you will need to come into school wearing your PE kit on PE days which are a Tuesday and Wednesday. In PE you will be working with Mr Berry inside for gymnastics and dance. Make sure you remember to bring a bottle of water in to school everyday!
