Spring 1 2022

Welcome back Year 3! I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas break and had a well deserved rest with your loved ones.  I can't wait to do some more exciting work with you this half term and work together to love, learn and grow!

On our class page you will be able to find information about this half terms learning.

At the top of this page I have attached this years topic overview and at the top you will find homework and spelling sheets along with some useful links to help you with your learning.

In our English sessions we will begin the half term by reading the story 'Iron man' by Ted Hughes. We will analyse the story and the themes behind the text as well as making plausible predictions for the ending. Our final piece will be to write a narrative using a chapter of the story to form our plan, we will work to include lots of interesting expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, conjunctions, speech and will begin to learn how to add paragraphs to our writing.

For our Guided Reading sessions, we will be focusing on applying our growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes, both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words that we discover. We will also be reading further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in the word. An important focus of our sessions will be checking that the text makes sense and discussing our understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context. Over the holidays, try to spend some time reading different styles of texts and practising your word reading and comprehension as much as possible.

We will start the half term by learning how to formally read and solve multiplication and division problems and will move on from using pictorial representations to learning the column method for multiplication. We will compare statements and identify patterns and related calculations and move on to multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit numbers with an exchange. In division we will be dividing 100 into 2, 4, 5 and 10 equal parts as well as dividing a 2 digit number by a one digit number and dividing with remainders. Later on in this half term we will then move onto recapping our learning on Monday from KS1 and will be introduced to the topic of Statistics. During this topic we will learn how to read different graphs and have a go at presenting data in different ways.

This term our Topic will be 'Stone Age to Iron Age'. We will be introduced to the idea that people have been living in Britain for a very long time and will learn about the changes that occurred between the middle Stone Age (Mesolithic Times) to the Iron Age – a period of over 10,000 years! We will have a go at investigating issues and solving valid historical questions about this time in history.

Our Science topic for this half-term is 'Forces and Magnets'. We will learn about forces in the context of pushing and pulling, and will identify different actions as pushes or pulls. We will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate friction and will work in a hands on way to identify magnetic materials. We will have chance to explore the way magnetic poles can attract and repel.

Our Topic in RE for Spring 1 is 'Journeys'. In this unit we will be learning all about the liturgical calendar and the journey through it during the year. We will also be learning about journeys in a literal sense and learn about pilgrims.

Home Learning

This half term, we will continue with our project based learning to replace our homework board. We will give these out during the first week back each half term and your child can complete over the half term. We ask that their project is brought into school on the last week of term to share and celebrate with their peers. You will be given a sheet of paper that will be stuck in your child’s learning log that will outline what the project is and ideas of activities you can do.  We feel this will give children more freedom to learn about real life world events, share personal experiences and will help motivate them to engage in home learning as it is child managed. It will also encourage them to be more independent, inquisitive and encourage outdoor learning together. This can be completed in your learning log, a scrap book of your choice or it can be uploaded onto Seesaw.

This half term you will need to come into school wearing your PE kit on PE days which are a Tuesday and Wednesday. In PE you will be working with Mr Berry outside for Games. Make sure you remember to bring a bottle of water in to school everyday!
