Summer 2 2022

Welcome back Year 3! I hope you have all had a lovely half-term break and had a well deserved rest with your loved ones.  I can't wait to do some more exciting work with you this half term and work together to love, learn and grow!

On our class page you will be able to find information about this half terms learning.

At the top of this page I have attached this years topic overview and at the top you will find homework and spelling sheets along with some useful links to help you with your learning.

In our English sessions we will begin the half term by reading the story 'The Lost Happy Endings' by Carol Ann Duffy. We will analyse the story and the themes behind the text and use the story to help us innovate a traditional fairy tale. This unit will be an everybody writes whereby the whole school will work on the same text. Our final piece will be to write a fact-file all about Nelson Mandala. At the end of the half term we will then write some instructions to make a disgusting sandwich.

For our Guided Reading sessions, we will be focusing on applying our growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes, both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words that we discover. We will also be reading further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in the word. An important focus of our sessions will be checking that the text makes sense and discussing our understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context. Over the holidays, try to spend some time reading different styles of texts and practising your word reading and comprehension as much as possible.

Our first topic this half term will be 'Time'. In this unit we will recap on telling the time to the nearest half hour, O'clock, quarter past and quarter to. Then we will move onto learning to tell the time to the nearest minute and telling time on a 24 hour clock and a digital clock. At the end of the half term we will move learning about 'Shape' and 'Mass and capacity'.

This term our Topic will be 'Ancient Egypt'. In this unit we will learn in depth about the achievements of the ancient civilisation. Including, where the ancient Egyptians lived, what was important to the daily lives of ancient Egyptians, who Tutankhamun was and how mummies were made. We will also learn about how Egyptian people used hieroglyphs to communicate and compare the powers of different gods. To end the term we will also look at where Egypt is located and do a study on the River Nile using knowledge from our topic on Rivers in the Autumn.

Our Science topic for this half-term is 'Animals including Humans'. In this we will recap how animals survive and stay healthy. We will then learn about the nutrients that different foods provide and how these nutrients help our bodies. In this unit, we will also explore the different types of skeletons that animals have and compare these and learn some names of bones in the human body and carry out an investigation to explore if people with longer femurs jump further. In the final lesson, children apply their ‘working scientifically’ skills to design and carry out an investigation of their own, based on the human skeleton

Our Topic in RE for Spring 2 is the 'Pentecost'. In the unit we will learn about how the dove represents peace and hope and learn all about the story of the Pentecost.

Home Learning

This half term, we will continue with our project based learning to replace our homework board. We will give these out during the first week back each half term and your child can complete over the half term. We ask that their project is brought into school on the last week of term to share and celebrate with their peers. You will be given a sheet of paper that will be stuck in your child’s learning log that will outline what the project is and ideas of activities you can do.  We feel this will give children more freedom to learn about real life world events, share personal experiences and will help motivate them to engage in home learning as it is child managed. It will also encourage them to be more independent, inquisitive and encourage outdoor learning together. This can be completed in your learning log, a scrap book of your choice or it can be uploaded onto Seesaw.

This half term you will need to come into school wearing your PE kit on PE days which are a Tuesday and Wednesday. In PE you will be working with Mr Berry outside for Games. Make sure you remember to bring a bottle of water in to school everyday!
