Here's what we will be learning this spring half-term:




We will be tackling the tricky topic of fractions, decimals and percentages.  We will be concentrating in particular on equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, working out fractions of numbers, ordering decimals and working out percentages of amounts.

The children will be focusing on consolidating and building upon their previous mathematical knowledge. In class children will practising their fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. 


 It is vital that children know their times tables and practice their mental arithmetic.

This half term we will be studying Jabberwocky for our poetry unit, analysing the language and using this to create their own . They will also be introduced to Year 5 spelling and grammatical features through this story.






 In R.E our topic is Lent - Sacrifice.  We will be exploring and appreciating the cost of giving.  In addition, we will be learning about Lent, a time of giving in preparation for the celebration of the sacrifice of Jesus. 


Key vocabulary we will be focusing on:

Lent, self-sacrifice, Holy Week, Easter, new life 



Key Questions we will be exploring throughout this topic:

Why are some people so generous in their giving?

What does sacrifice mean in daily life?






For our topic this term we will be investigating The Maya civilisation! 

We will be locating where the Mayas lived and comparing the geography of Mesoamerica with the UK. We will also be exploring when and where the remains of the Maya civilisation were found and investigating Maya food.






In Science we will be looking at forces. 

In this topic we will be explaining that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity. We will also be identifying the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction that act between moving surfaces.




  • PE will be on a Wednesday (outdoor) and Friday (indoor). The children must bring the appropriate PE Kit in a labelled PE bag.
  • We kindly ask that you spend 15 minutes a day reading at home with your child. Reading Records need to be written in and signed each night and shown in class every morning along with reading books.


  • Your child will be given a learning log at the start of the year with this half term's homework board at the front. The children are able to choose which activity they wish to complete each week from their homework board and we ask that this is completed in their learning log and brought back to school on a Friday morning. The children will have chance to share their home learning with their peers on Friday afternoons. 
  • Spelling lists will be given out half termly and the children will be tested on a Friday.
